Y’all I can’t believe it, but my prayers have been answered. It looks like we’re getting a re-release of Buckingham Nicks. YA, THIS IS NOT A DRILL THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

So to anyone who’s new here — 4 years ago, I decided to get on Beyoncé’s internet and rant about Buckingham Nicks, aka the gorgeous, “forgotten” album that is THE REASON that we know and celebrate Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Fleetwood Mac as some of the most iconic musicians of all time. I asked politely in that post for Stevie and Lindsey to consider re-releasing it. I said my piece and then just kinda carried on telling anyone I could about that album when I remembered…

Fast forward to last week when Stevie Nicks posted this:

And Lindsey Buckingham posted this:

AND THEN MICK FLEETWOOD POSTED THIS:

He’s absolutely correct.

Now since I have had no brain space from the literally insane amount of work I am trying to balance right now, I didn’t immediately piece this together until some lovely, but uneducated people on TikTok were talking about Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks having a “60 year situationship.” Which is not wrong, but a complete simplification of who I consider to be my estranged musical parents.

It was not about them “getting back together” romantically. No, it was better in my eyes — I knew they were hinting at the fact that my scream into the void of the internet had been heard.

Not that I need to ask for permission BUT I need this space to get out the thoughts that are swirling around in my brain about this because THIS HAS BEEN YEARS IN THE MAKING FOR ME AND NATURALLY I KNOW I’M NOT ALONE IN FREAKING OUT ABOUT THIS NEWS. Yes, of course, I wanted to present to you some new music crushes I’ve been getting into or this think piece about the changing times of country music or even the songs that are starting to soundtrack the beautiful, new romance in my life (hi Luke!! I love you!! 😘), BUT I need to shout into the void again about what this re-release means to me and why the Buckingham Nicks story will forever live rent free in my head. It’s all my nervous system can take right now.

SO THAT SAID.

THIS IS HUGE.

FIRST OF ALL, WHICH ONE OF YOU READ MY BLOG POST FROM YEARS AGO? Because for YEARS, I would see people reading my post, ever so steadily increasing lifetime views on that post. At most, I hoped someone would read it and think “yeah this girl’s got a point! It’s an amazing album.” (Thank you to those that reached out and said something like that over the years!) But at least, I wanted people to know about this gorgeous album if they hadn’t known about it. I DIDN’T THINK ANYONE WITH THE POWER TO DO ANYTHING WOULD ACTUALLY LISTEN TO ME AND CONSIDER MY PLEA. BUT HERE WE ARE AND AHHHHHH.

Second of all (and I promise I’m calming down now), I want to take off my cynical music industry business lady glasses off and say that my pure fangirl heart is overjoyed by this news because I truly believe this is the kind of album that deserves to be preserved.

Like it’s truly mind boggling to me how much it stands the test of time. I viscerally remember how floored I was at 17 years old first listening to these songs, just so enamored with the way they made an album that captured the best of themselves at the time. I still stand by everything I said 4 years ago. And yes, to this day, I still feel that strongly about this album.

Third of all, and no disrespect to Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird but their interpretation of these songs just didn’t capture the same magic in the original album. I listened to it hoping that there would be a bit of the magic in it, but their interpretations were nothing but just some pretty folk songs. The original album is the work of a hungry musical duo, aching to be heard by the world and each other. You listen to the album and hear raw cries of love and tension and hope between lovers just trying to make it out there. And that’s a story that is both so real and so timeless.

I’ve referred to Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham as my estranged musical parents on multiple occasions because they both have had massive influence on how I feel my way through music. Stevie with her otherworldly poetry, Lindsey with his extraordinary musical talent, and both of them with their beautifully raw vocals intertwining like California grape vines. But the estranged part…let’s talk about that too.

Fourth of all, I think it’s the tension between Buckingham and Nicks that is exactly what makes this album so special. You’re entranced by Stevie and Lindsey as they take turns baring their souls in song. It’s effortless at times and then it’s pleading at others. It’s harmonious at times and then it’s angry at others. It’s ethereal at times and then it’s primal at others. It’s a masterclass in making the most beautiful humane music. And it’s something I think we all need to soak in after all the hysteria of AI generated music these days. (AI could NEVER replicate the soul-exposing music of Buckingham Nicks.)

Lastly, I’ll say this: I am so excited that everyone will get to talk about these songs because there really is so much to unpack — from the music to the lyrics to the history of this album. I remember back in my freshman year of college I took a communication theory class and for my final paper, I wrote about the relational dynamics in the album Rumours. I cannot wait for a college student to write about the relational dynamics found in Buckingham Nicks. (If anyone does that, pls send it to me for funsies.) Hell, if I was in that class again, I’d do it.

Anyway, if anyone wants to send me a signed vinyl of it…you can reach me at Soundslikefeelslike@gmail.com!! I would treasure it in my collection if you’d be so kind!!! If not, I will definitely be purchasing it separately and streaming it — thank you thank you thank you so much for releasing this album into the world. I just know all future generations will thank you for it.
